Why are you doing a blog about the name Herbert?
Last week I was listening the London talk radio station LBC and I heard the presenter James O’Brien call himself a “complete Herbert” .
To be honest I am not English, I am Irish, and in Ireland we don’t use the name Herbert as slang, and that is why I decided to write this blog.
Where does the name Herbert come from?
The name Herbert was introduced into the UK by the Normans, and it is derived from the German Hariberth.
It was a very popular name in the 19th century.
What does it mean in slang?
In recent years the name Herbert has become a popular slang word that is used to describe a person who is considered unintelligent and/or boring.
“John is a bit of Herbert, he is rude and spends all day watching soap operas on TV”
“I am so sorry I forgot your birthday, I am complete Herbert!”
Is it offensive slang?
What is language exchange?
Language exchange is when two or more people meet to swap languages in a friendly and informal style.
For example, you are a Spanish speaker, and you want to improve your Italian, but you don’t want to take formal Italian lessons.
When you use language exchange, you offer your Spanish to an Italian person, your chat partner, who wants to speak Spanish.
You meet your chat partner and agree to spend some time speaking in Spanish and then some time speaking in Italian.
You should correct any errors you hear in a positive and constructive manner, and you will find that you can improve your second language very quickly.
